Reading DVDs and USBs in your computer

CD-ROM Services will usually transfer your videos to MP4 format. This format can be read on most newer DVD players. To read video DVDs in a Windows computer you need to have installed a CODEC in your PC. Examples of suitable codecs are Windows Media Player 12, Realplayer, VLC Media Player and others. Many new computers are supplied without any codec to read videos.
Windows 10 dropped support for DVD-Video ( MPEG-2 ) playback, so download and install VLC, developed by the VideoLAN project, which is open source and cross platform and can play pretty much any media format at https://www.videolan.org/

How hard is it to transfer or rip my discs to USB?

Ripping or transferring your discs to USB or PC is not difficult. First you do need a CD/DVD reader, and since many new computers are sold without a disc reader you made need to buy an external disc reader for about $40.00 and attach it to your computer through the USB port or install it in your computer.
Then you need ripping software, and there is a wide selection available both for Windows and PC, some even for free.
Then you need to work out how to set-up the software so the result is what you need for the purposes. You need to make choices in your software between speed an quality, understand the terms used and then work out how to use the software.
Then you need to insert the original disc in your CD/DVD player, chose the source, wait for the software to check the discs, and then start the ripping process.
When the transfer or ripping is completed, you will usually need to go to the destination folder and manually type in the identifying title for each disc.
Then you can re-copy the ripped files to a USB or upload them to another PC or cloud storage, a USB or transfer them through a file transfer program to others.
Or you can bring, post or send your discs to CD-ROM Services Pty Ltd at Level 1, 79 Oxford Street, Bondi junction, NSW 2022 who have doing this for many years, and you will get the best result, at about $20.00 per disc.

Copyright limitations

CD-ROM Services will not rip commercial and copyright videos without permission of the copyright owners.
Should you wish to transfer a favourite old film, then we would suggest that check whether it is available on one of the streaming services. It will also probably be cheaper than paying for removing DRM restrictions and ripping.
