THE GOOD NEWS - PERSONAL USE RECORDING LEGITIMISED
THE BAD NEWS - POSSIBLE LEVY ON MEDIA & PLAYERS
The International Disc Duplicating Association, IDDA, welcomes proposed changes to the Australian copyright laws legalising the video recording of television shows for personal use, and the transfer of songs from CDs to MP3 players. There are few Australians who have not committed the crime of taping a TV show, and it is time that the copyright law is brought into line with what Australians believe is acceptable practice. The Attorney General Philip Ruddock is showing leadership in also allowing people to copy their CDs to MP3 and other formats for playing on iPods and similar players.

DISC DUPLICATING NOW A SIGNIFICANT PLAYER AT MEDIA-TECH EXPO
The disc duplicating industry, until recently, a bit player in the optical media industry is about to take a major part. The lower prices for media, cheaper automatic duplicators, faster burning speeds, approaching solutions to disc printing, have made seen the duplicators production runs increase. Will duplicating i.e.. burning, replace replicating, i.e.. stamping?

ABOUT DISC AND TAPE LEVIES
Are Australians honest enough for a simple voluntary levy on recordable media for 'PRIVATE USE' rights? The government has the choice of a simpler voluntary levy, or a compulsory levy that treats us like thieves, and are we thieves?
IDDA suggests opt in levy rather than opt out levy on recordable media.
The International Disc Duplicating Association, IDDA, believes that the proposal to the government for a royalty on recordable discs and tapes by Screenrights, APRA, AMCOS, and other bodies at http://www.screen.org/about/submissions.html, concerned with copyright has merit in legitimising private use, but the Screenrights proposal needs only minor changes to be widely acceptable, practical and popular.
