Single discs take 5 to 20 minutes, depending on the depth of the scratches, with discounts for quantity. As long as the top surface of the CD is not damaged, (where the data is stored), it can normally be repaired. DVDs have their data stored like a sandwich in the middle of the disc, so these are usually restorable.

 

The disc polisher applies a fine polishing compound to the underside of the disc.

Unfortunately data recorded on some low quality discs cannot be restored by polishing, as the recordable media is simply unreadable. CD-ROM Services Pty Ltd suggests that users ensure that they only use high quality media such as Taiyo Yuden (also known as That's CDR), Verbatim and TDK. However some household brand names, and even some of the most popular brands produce media of a quality that you should not use.

 

Of course, ideally you should handle discs in such a way that they don't become scratched or dirty. Discs should be held only by the edges. Discs should be removed from the case and placed directly into the disc drive. Nothing else should ever touch the playing surface of the disc. However, if your discs have become damaged, this is an excellent way to get them playing again.
